Lattey is probably derived from the Scottish name Lawty, part of the McLaren clan, and Miss Lauty (Leuty?,Lautie?) is believed to have been the daughter of a physician in Stirling, where she met John Hely (1724 -1794). He was a Member of Parliament for Irish constituencies as well as Provost of Trinity College ,Dublin. Lattey as a name may well have been modified by the Irish registrar when Joseph Senior's birth was registered because Miss Lauty could not read and he could not spell her Scots pronunciation of her name.The Stirling library records have no reference to a medical man of a name like Lawty at the relevant dates, so it may indicate that John Hely met her in Campbelltown on his way to Sterling, or that Ms Lauty was only a servant in the household of John Hely at either Clonmel or Dublin.
John Hely married the heiress niece of Richard Hutchinson, a wealthy landowner, and adopted the surname Hely-Hutchinson. John Hely had a demesne at Palmerston, Dublin and accepted the Knocklofty demesne (nearClonmel) from Hutchinson as his wife's dowry. He had 6 sons and 4 daughters by his wife between 1756 and 1769, and he obtained a peerage for his wife in 1783, as Baroness Donoughmore, of Knocklofty, Co. Tipperary. He did not take a title since this would have lost him his seat as an MP. The current Earl of Donoughmore (1927) lives at the Manor House, Bampton in Oxfordshire and has placed all the Donoughmore papers with Trinity College , Dublin on permanent loan to the Library there. Dr APW Malcomson has made a calendar of the Donoughmore papers, and this calendar is available for consultatation at the National Registrar of Archives, Quality House, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1HP. The Donoughmore papers include correspondence and papers relating to John Hely-Hutchinson over the period 1748 to 1794, covering Trinity College, Edmund Burke, the 1st Earl of Liverpool, George Macartney, Charles O'Hara and Thomas Ord - later Lord Bolton. A brief review of the Calendar and some of the more personal papers at Trinity College shows no reference to any relationship between Miss Lauty and John Hely-Hutchinson.
Joseph Senior Lattey (JSL) was born to Miss Lautie in June 1770 (?) and married Frances Letita Pittar (FLP), a Huguenot, at St Ann(e)'s, Dublin on 12 June 1805. The Hibernian Journal(? Gazette) of 15 June 1805 reported the wedding as between JSL of CLONMEL and FLP of St STEVENS GREEN, whereas Sir William Betham's Abstracts records (No 203, p74) the marriage of JSL of the City of DUBLIN and FLP of the parish of St ANNE, DUBLIN on 11 June 1805. In 1805 the Earl of Donoughmore was one of three Commissioners of HM Revenues for the Customs and Excise, and S M Pittar was Clerk to the Informations from 8 Feb 1807.(+) JSL subsequently had a career in the Customs and Excise, and the calendar of his work and eleven child family is as follows :
